All about that Bass
Shine Festival's identity never fails to impress me - year after year, the event's branding hints at what design trends are in this year, and this year is no different. Having a well-designed identity is one of the less-talked about ways to attract the attention of young people, so it's no surprise that Shine Festival follows the likes of youth-centric brands such as MTV when it comes to branding.
Move over Vaporwave
To refresh your memory, last year's identity was inspired by vaporwave culture, at a time when the humble Tumblr aesthetic conquered mainstream Internet with the help of major brands like...you guessed it, MTV.
Detailed 3D renderings of objects are part of the vaporwave a e s t h e t i c , so 2018's identity can be seen as a more stripped down version of its predecessor's.
Online Announcement for Shine Festival 2018 |
The 4 categories of Shine, like the year before, are E-Sports, Media, Music & Dance, and Sports. Each category gets a symmetrical 3D icon set, which pops out in the posters below:
Electrifying Colours
The 3D models are just one part of the identity which makes it great - another equally important part of it is the colour palette, which exudes energy and injects vibrancy into the pop out icons. Just look at this year's logo: yellow on pink on a gradient of blue is so easy on the eyes...
From red and blue footballs to yellow guitars, I've created colour palettes based on this year's identity for your reference (lol of course I'd be using them too).
The Shine Festival truly lives up to its name, as far as branding's concerned. Give me next year's one already.
Eh, don't bluetick leh, leave a comment. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram as well!
P.S. Glad they removed the "NYC Presents" part for the logo |
Type with an attitude
The typefaces used this year number about 5, including outline fonts and variable fonts (trendy!). Messy as they might seem, they do work well together when animated, creating this brutalist style online ad.
