Singapore Ink Show 2017: Colour Me

About the Singapore Ink Show

The Singapore Ink Show is a gathering of international and local tattoo artists, from the 21st to 23rd of April. It is the largest ever event dedicated to tattoo art ever since the Singapore Tattoo Convention and Singapore Tattoo Art and Culture Show, which were held in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

The Lion King in the Lion City

I am usually critical about putting lions in any Singapore-related event or team or government body, because of how cliché and safe this option is. However, for the Singapore Ink Show's lion, it manages to captivate audiences with the vivid colours and realism of the sketch. The excellence is not surprising, considering how much more difficult it is to draw on uneven canvases such as people!

In addition, the usage of the lion also shows how far we have progressed as a nation to recognise tattoos as an art form and accept people with tattoos. Granted, problems still arise from time to time, but these events are a step in the right direction, especially when Your Singapore is a sponsor/partner

Logotype

The logotype for the event plays with the "in" in "Singapore" to create a unique twist in the colours. Apart from the kerning error (P-O), the logo looks solid and commands authority, providing a good contrast to the colourful lion.

It is also good to note the the logotype is more frequently used in promotional materials as compared to the lion, as using a lion would probably draw too much attention rather than the content itself.

Overall, the branding of the event is a celebration of a tattoo artist's mastery of colour, which is both a talent few can say they have.
